100 YEARS AGO

(1907)

On next Monday there will be a meeting of the city assessor and the 11 township trustees to agree upon a basis of valuation for the taxes of property in the year '07.

Patrons of the late James Russell, who had grocery accounts with him, will do the widow a great favor by calling at the store as soon as possible.

Mrs. James Russell, widow of James Russell, known as the Normal Grocer, says that she will sell the entire stock of groceries at cost to old patrons and those living on the South side.

Sam Berner, who with Glen Campbell, Colonel Morrow, and others, owners the slaughter house, stated today that arrangements would be made at once for rebuilding of the plant. No one seems to be able to solve the mystery of the origin of the fire. It is a hard matter to fix the loss.

75 YEARS AGO

(1932)

Sergeant Ludwig of the local recruiting station stated today that enlistments for service in the Hawaiian Islands would open March 1. The government is anxious to get men who have seen service in the army and who have been discharged with excellent, or at least very good character.

Lew Hershey of this city has been entertaining an old friend, Kaual Testuwari, a Japanese. Mr. Hershey, who is a circus clown by profession, has been wintering in Fort Scott. He has been with all the big tops and is now negotiating with Ringlings for the 1932 season.

In the south window of the Liepman clothing store is a huge banana leaf, a portion of a stalk of fruit and what seems to be a ruby red blossom at the end of a long winding stem. This was sent by Parcel Post by C E. Cory from Lake Charles, La. Cory cautions his friend not to eat a pod from the bush.

50 YEARS AGO

(1957)

Francis E. Myers, executive secretary for eight years of the Fort Scott Liberty Savings and Loan Association, 12 East Wall, last night was elected president of the association. Myers succeeds the late R.H. Hubbart.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hinderliter will observe their golden wedding anniversary on March 3 at their country home on Stateline, southwest of Hume. Friends and relatives are invited.

UNIONTOWN--Elmo Heckman took a bus load of basketball boys to Lawrence Saturday to see the game between KU and Nebraska teams. Others attending the game from here were Professor and Mrs. Porter, Mr. and Mrs. Don Dennis, Mr. and Mrs. Richard McKennis, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Clark and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Holt.

The Bourbon County Wolf Hunters Association will stage the second drive of the season at Pawnee Sunday. Three wolves were killed last Sunday at Devon. Several got way because of the shortage of men, which allowed the lines to be loose. About 75 men took part.

(1982)

Members of Northwest Scott 4-H Club initiated 14 new members: Scott Center, DeAnne Renard, Jenna Nelson, Amanda Swank, Jeff Allen, John Cauthon, Tisha Cowen, Mary Kay Warford, Craig Colegrove, Cheryl Rylander, Sean Bowman, Jessica Clara, Tera Combs and Thabena Miller. Recreation was directed by Dana Matson and David Renard.
