The JOY Sunday School Class held their monthly meeting on Feb. 12, with 12 present for a fine carry-in dinner and business meeting conducted by president Patty Peterson. Birthday offerings were given by Mary Lee Payne and by Vera Parrish, for her three grandchildren, Karter, 4, Allyson, 6, and Glessner and Tara VanLeeuwen, 19.
Betty Briggs read a touching poem titled "An Old Man." Funny business quotes were given by Mary Lee Payne and Vera Parrish. The class will celebrate its 51st year on March 17 with dinner at Chicken Mary's in Yale.
The president closed the meeting with this poem: "Be thankful for lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing, because it means you have a home." Others present were Gary Peterson, Emory Briggs, Mae Watt, Bob and Ava Mae Adams, Jack Payne, John Parrish, and Mary V. Shead.
Guests in Arcadia Christian Church on Sunday morning, Feb. 18, were Steve Snider, Jaci and Jaelyn from Parsons, and Amanda Snider, Arma. The guest speaker that morning was Jace Pavlik, of Joplin, Mo., one of the Sunday school teachers for the youth.
Folks of Arcadia were sorry to hear of the death of Bill Fowler, Weir, who was born and reared in Arcadia. He graduated from Arcadia High School in 1940. Our sympathy goes to the family.
Forrest and Ernestine Berkey enjoyed dinner at the Rocking K on Valentine's Day, then delivered valentine gifts to their daughter, Angela, and Bill Redd, and granddaughters, Kristen and Bethany.
The Sunday before the President's holiday, guests for dinner at the Shead farm, rural Garland, were Jeremiah and Shawna Marcum, Joplin; Jeff McCormick, Fort Scott; Mitzi and Joel Ray, Tulsa, Okla.; Mark and Haley Shead, Fort Scott; and Mary V. Shead, Arcadia. Jeremiah was guest speaker in the morning services at Abundant Grace Church in Fort Scott.
Friends are sorry to hear of the death of Dr. M.H. Kneeland, of Liberal, Mo. He died Feb. 9, 2007, in Rosewood Residential Care, Rolla, Mo. He was 88. His wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death in 1999.
T.M. James, 82, died Feb. 13, 2007, in St. Luke's Hospital. He was born and reared in rural Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1942. He married Georgia Wood in 1964. T.M. was a veteran of World War II. Sympathy goes to the family.
