Avalene N. Putnam, age 93, a former Fort Scott resident, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, at the Garden Valley Manor in North Kansas City, Mo. She was born May 25, 1913, in Redfield, Kan., the daughter of David Oscar Burt and Emma Clarisa Brillhart Burt. She married Francis E. Putnam in Nevada, Mo., on Sept. 5, 1936. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle in Fort Scott.

Avalene is survived by three nieces, Paula Carlson, Norma Browning, and Susie Burt; three nephews, Danny Burt, Ken Burt, and Paul Burt; one sister, Mildred Shiflett; three great-nephews, Ron Browning, Noah Carlson, and Gabe Carlson; two great-nieces, Vicki Sims and Pam Browning; and two great-great nieces, Neely Sims and Lacey Sims. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Francis Putnam; two brothers, Dalton Burt and Gene Burt; and a sister, Rachel Hart.

Funeral services for Avalene Putnam will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, officiated by Rev. Paul Rooks. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery.
