Fort Scott's Heather Rhuems and Amber Obert dive for the ball during the second game of a Jayhawk Conference volleyball match with Allen County at Arnold Arena Wednesday night.

Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth and deciding game of a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Divis-ion match with Allen County at Arnold Arena Wednesday night and held on for a three-games-to-two victory, the Greyhounds' first of the season in seven matches.

"In order to win a fifth game, you have to start out strong," Fort Scott head coach Angie Kemmerer said. "And when you start out 5-0, it really helps with momentum. It put a lot of pressure on the other team. It gives us a little breathing room and allows us to be aggressive."

The scores were 30-26, 22-30, 33-31, 28-30 and 15-10.

The Greyhounds built their lead in game five by forcing a side out on the first serve by Allen County and then seeing Girard freshman Heather Rhuems record four consecutive kills.

Later, Lamar, Mo., sophomore Amber Obert served three aces and Rhuems got another kill in another five-point run that made it 11-4. An ace by Hutchinson freshman Whitney Duncan gave Fort Scott the win.

Rhuems recorded 20 kills on the night. Obert racked up 21 assists and five aces.

"Very consistent the whole match, both of them," Kemmerer said of Rhuems and Obert. "Heather was definitely a go-to hitter and Amber made a lot of special plays by getting to the ball. Both of them served very well and brought us back into the game. Very tough serving in game three and gave five by Heather."

The Red Devils, 3-8, showed signs of stubbornness in the first game. Down 29-21, they scored five in a row before Molly Outersky finally ended that game with a kill.

The Devils overcame a 14-10 deficit in the second game, scoring 12 straight points to take control.

Allen rallied again in the third game to take a 30-29 lead. They also led 31-30 before they made three consecutive errors that gave that game to Fort Scott.

The Devils led 22-14 in the fourth game but the 'Hounds rallied and took a 25-24 lead on Rheums' dink that landed between defenders.

Outersky, a Parsons sophomore, and Jessica McKinley, a Topeka freshman, each had seven kills for the 'Hounds.

Turney, Mo., sophomore Emily Turner recorded 10 blocks for FSCC. Duncan had 11 assists.

The Greyhounds will go to Sedalia, Mo., Friday for a non-conference match with State Fair Community College. Fort Scott's next home match will be against Cottey Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.
