Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens started their day, Aug. 14, with blood pressure readings and sugar count by Chris Kennedy from Girard Hospital on a warm Monday morning. She was a guest at dinner and gave pill boxes to those who cared for one. A fine dinner was provided of lasagna, grilled chicken wings, corn on the cob, potato salad, veggies, strawberry-rhubarb pie and warm bread. Jack Payne gave the blessing.

The business meeting opened by President Carole Garrison with Lord's Prayer and flag salute. After business was cared for, Mary V. Shead read of the family, Jack Payne noted a story about Dolly Parton, Mary Lee Payne quoted a poem entitled "Four To Go." Lilly Coonrod informed about Oscar Wilde and Jerry Coonrod quoted St. Peter. Carole read from Desiderta 1692.

Others present were Bob Cavin and Helen Sisney. All are welcome to come for free blood pressure reading, etc. on Sept. 11 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. in the cottage east of the Open Door Church in Arcadia.

Sunday afternoon, Aug. 13, fifty people from the Abundant Grace Church in Fort Scott enjoyed a carry-in dinner in the patio of Larry and Vickie Shead to honor the students who left this month to attend various colleges. Each of the students gave an account of where they will be this fall.

In celebration of their 32nd anniversary, Ralph and Cindy Shead visited Har-Ber Village in Missouri. They had dinner at Red Lobster in Joplin, Mo. where they were greeted by their old time college friends, David and Rose Fish. Ralph and David were members of the same quartet while attending Ozark Christian College. David is now a professor in the same college. Both families served many years as missionaries in Santiago, Chile.

It was good to have Emory and Betty Briggs back teaching the JOY Sunday School Class the morning of Aug. 20.

The cookout fund-raiser for the new Arcadia fire station was a big success, in that a good big crowd attended and by the time the music started, a good breeze came up and folks moved their chairs to the parking lot and enjoyed an evening of fun after the special meal. Paul and Nathan Starne, with helpers like Roger Harris, city workers and volunteer firemen, cooked and served barbeque chicken, corn on the cob dipped in butter, baked beans, along with hot dogs and hamburgers and cooked cabbage. It was a treat for all ages, topped off with both chocolate and white cakes for dessert. A report of the donations given will be reported later. Thanks also goes to the wives of the fireman and their friends who did more to help shoo the flies.
