FRONTENAC -- Blue Valley Southwest was able to sustain more runs than Fort Scott High's girls here Saturday as the Timberwolves took third place in the Kansas Army National Guard Invitational, 56-26. Webb City's boys reached the 80-point mark for the second consecutive night in beating Fort Scott High's 81-68 in the fifth-place game in the boys' bracket...

Fort Scott Community College's men dropped a pair of home games at Arnold Arena Saturday and Monday, one of which could come back to haunt the Greyhounds in the chase for a home game in the Region VI-Division II Tournament. The Greyhounds dropped a 66-62 verdict to independent Hesston, suffering their first loss in region play. That makes a Feb. 15 rematch at Hesston extremely important in order to prevent a tie-breaker from going against Fort Scott (2-1 region, 9-11 overall)...

Fort Scott Community College's women are back on the winning track, taking a pair of victories in a three-day period on Saturday and Monday in non-conference games at Arnold Arena. Saturday, the Greyhounds picked up their first win in Region VI play, tying the school record for points scored in a game in a 100-54 blowout of region independent Hesston. Monday, Fort Scott improved to 13-3 on the season with a 75-53 win over Southeast (Neb.)...

UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown's basketball teams split a Three Rivers League doubleheader with Jayhawk-Linn here Tuesday night. The girls prevailed, 42-33, over the Jayhawks while the boys fell, 43-40. Shalina Harper led Eagle girls (1-2 TRL, 5-7 overall) with 16 points while also grabbing 8 rebounds and handing out 4 assists. Holly Shinn scored 11 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Danielle Young also had 5 rebounds...

PAOLA -- Zarek Fewell, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, finished in second place at 152 pounds at a tournament here over the weekend. Fewell, 14-3 on the season, won his first three matches before falling in the final to second-ranked Johnny Towbridge of Basehor-Linwood by a score of 10-5. ...

Fort Scott High's girls rallied valiantly against Independence, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A-Division I by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association this week, getting within four points as the third quarter closed at the FSHS gymnasium Tuesday night. But after being held scoreless in the first quarter of this make-up Southeast Kansas League contest and managing just two field goals, the deficit proved to be too much to overcome and the Tigers fell to the visiting Bulldogs, 36-26...

This is the 10th and final basketball game that's to be summarized in this edition of this newspaper. And there's probably no way to give it a proper write-up since it's the one being prepared as deadline closes on Tuesday night. But the battle between Fort Scott High's boys and Independence in a Southeast Kansas League make-up game at the FSHS gymnasium Tuesday night deserves a volume to itself. Or maybe in this day, its own Wikipedia page...
