The Bourbon County Commissioners have moved leaking Elm Creek Lake higher up on their priority list. On Friday, they met with Don George, district fisheries biologist Region 5 of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, to discuss funding options to make repairs at the lake. During the meeting, commissioners agreed to hold a planning session with several entity representatives at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, to determine how to proceed...

USD 234 Superintendent Bob Beckham and other education leaders across the state received some disappointing news Thursday concerning school funding. Gov. Sam Brownback has announced a 1.5 percent cut to public schools across the state, which amounts to a $28.3 million reduction. ...

Fort Scott Middle School's eighth-grade basketball "A" and "B" teams have each played three games this week. And the "A" team isn't done yet, going to a tournament at Chanute-Royster this morning. The week began on Monday at Coffeyville-Roosevelt. The "A" team took a 50-36 loss despite Jordan Hall's 14 points. The "B" team held off Roosevelt for a 24-22 win with Nick Deloney scoring 11 points...

Then the Tigers had to withstand a Viking rally in the third and rely on their defense in the fourth before prevailing, 63-40, and keeping pace with first-place Independence, which saw Tate Turner score 33 points in a 46-43 nail-biter over Labette County...
