There will be an open house at the Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. The jail is located at the Bourbon County Courthouse, northwest entrance.

While paying property taxes may not be the most enjoyable thing to do, this year the Bourbon County Treasurer has made it a little easier. Bourbon County property owners can pay their taxes online or pay at one of the five remote locations. "To provide good customer service, the county has to provide multiple ways for the taxpayers to pay their taxes," Rhonda Dunn, Bourbon County Treasurer said. ...

Emotions ran high Thursday as West Bourbon Elementary School students and staff celebrated the school receiving a National Blue Ribbon School 2014 designation recently. Robert Vincent (RV) Miller, 84, of Missoula, Mont., passed away of natural causes on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014 at Community Medical Center. RV was born Jan. 14, 1930 in Uniontown, Kan., to Milo and Laura Miller. As a young boy he lived with his family on a farm and was educated in a one-room schoolhouse. ...

Four members of Fort Scott High School's soccer team were chosen to the All-Southeast Kansas League team recently. Two were placed on the First Team. The Tigers First Team picks are seniors Jonah Jones and Hector Torres-Leiva. They are joined by four members of league champion Pittsburg -- seniors Sullivan Lauderdale, Ricky Sanchez and Emmanuel Gonzalez, and junior Frander Marroquin. ...

Southeast Kansas League runner-up Fort Scott saw three players picked to the All-SEK volleyball team recently, all of them chosen to the First Team. The Tigers finished second in the SEK at 5-1 with an overall record of 20-17. Chanute won the SEK for the third consecutive season...

NEVADA -- Fort Scott Middle School's eighth-grade teams played here Thursday with the "A" team winning over Nevada while the "B" team lost. The eighth graders played at Nevada Middle School. The "A" squad (2-1) doubled up Nevada, 30-15, as Madi Farmer scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Abby Humble scored 6 points and led with 8 rebounds. Jocie Allen also scored 6 points...

Fort Scott High had the first play from scrimmage in Friday night's Class 4A-Division I Sectional Playoff Game at Frary Field against No. 1-ranked Bishop Miege. And it was a 34-yard run by running back Brendyn Quinney. Although the Tigers' drive stalled and Bishop Miege was able to make three big plays on its first drive, the Tigers were able to keep the Stags off the scoreboard when Quinney intercepted a pass in the end zone for a touchback...

All residents in Bourbon County will have the opportunity to spend some time in the Southeast Kansas Regional Correction Center during an open house from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. Bourbon County Sheriff Bill Martin and SEKRCC Jail Administrator Bobby Reed are hosting the open house as a way to educate the public on the condition of the facility, working conditions for the officers and the need for a new facility...
