Mary Lou (Helton) Sheperd, age 67, passed away March 6, 2014 at her home in rural Carl Junction, Mo., with her husband and daughter by her side following a long illness. She was born Sept. 24, 1946 in Canon City, Colo., to Edwin and Hettie Helton. Mary retired from the Civil Service after working for the U.S. Department of Air Force for 29 years in California. She moved back to Missouri and went to work for the state retiring in 2011...

As the Bourbon County Commissioners prepare to begin working on the 2015 budget, they are keeping an eye on current finances. One of those areas is the Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center budget. People can begin strolling the trail at Riverfront Park starting next week. It has taken almost a decade, but the tree-lined Marmaton River and Mill Creek convergence area, north of the National Avenue bridge, is beginning to look like a park.
