Several memorable events made up 2013 in Fort Scott and Bourbon County. The most noteworthy stories of the year included accidents, fires and storms, as well as the murder trial of a local man. Other top stories included new faces in public offices, an investigation of theft at the Bourbon County Clerk's office, and a remembrance of a prominent local citizen. On Jan. 5, four members of Fort Scott High School's wrestling team walked away winners in their respective weight classes at the Dick Burns Mat Classic in Bonner Springs. The Tigers also took home the team title in addition to nine total FSHS wrestlers earning medals at the event. The Tigers scored 204 ½ points to win the title by 28 ½ points over the host school, who came into the tournament ranked second in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association...

Sara Jane Schneider died Jan. 2 in Cottonwood Falls. She was born March 12, 1935 in Fort Scott, Kan. Services will take place at a later date. Baker Funeral Home, 114 N. Sycamore, Peabody, Kan., 1-800-344-2144, is in charge of arrangements.
