ERIE -- A two-person scramble golf tournament to benefit the Eastern Kansas Adult Education Consortium will be held at Prairie Ridge Golf Club, located two miles north of Erie at the junction of U.S. 59 and K-146, at 10 a.m. September 14. The Fort Scott Community College Greyhound football team will open up its 2013 season against Highland Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday at Frary Field. About 70 players were in attendance as Fort Scott High School held its first football practice of the 2013 season Monday afternoon. Because school began Friday, this will be the first time that head coach Bob Campbell won't be able to hold two-a-day practices. Gwen Hemmingway Sullivan, age 85, a former resident of Fort Scott and more recently of Ada, Okla., passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Wildwood Care Center in Tulsa, Okla., where she had been a patient for a short time. Gwen grew up in Fort Scott where she attended local schools and graduated with the high school class of 1945. Gwen lived the last 40-some years of her life in Ada, Okla., where she was a member of the First Christian Church...

Carolyn Sue Butler, age 63, resident of Arma, Kan., died early Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Arma Care Center. Following cremation, a private family burial will be held in Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel. Mercy Hospital Fort Scott kicked off a new campaign to help raise funds to join a telemedicine program with other hospitals in and outside the Mercy network. Saturday's campaign kickoff event was sponsored by the Mercy Health Foundation.
