Pamela Jeane "P.J." Self, 17, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at her home. She was born March 12, 1994, in Wichita, Kan., the daughter of Dr. Maxwell and Karen Berk Self. P.J. advanced to the National Spelling Bee, was a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist and was a ferocious competitor in anything academic or intellectual, but more than that she was a warm, witty, artistic, fun-loving young woman who graciously lived with a disability in a way that touched everyone she came in contact with.. ...

Investigation continues into deadly house fire

An investigation continues into a house fire that occurred Oct. 13 at a home on Grand Road just south of Fort Scott, officials said Wednesday. Jeff Wagaman, spokesman for Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt's office, said a structure fire that took place at a residence located at 2166 Grand Road on Oct. 13 "remains under investigation" and that a timetable for the investigation is currently undetermined. He said he could not release additional details on the investigation at this time...

Rienbolt enjoying successful first season

The first cross-country race of Katren Rienbolt's life at the beginning of this season was the longest race she had ever run. She won. Then the next week, she was promoted to the varsity for the Fort Scott High School home meet. She won again. And she kept winning.
