At sunset (approximately 6 p.m.) on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1864 the last battle of the day occurred northwest of Deerfleld, Mo. This battle, like many battles in the Civil War has a few names. It has been called the Battle of the Marmaton, Little Marmaton Creek, Shiloh Creek and Chariot's Farm which makes it very interesting and at times confusing to study. ...

Army National Guard Pfc. Benjamin T. Gettler has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Angela Dauben and grandson of Rita Emmerson of South Holbrook, both of Fort Scott. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.. ...

Herman "Wally" Waldmer, age 86, Aurora, Mo., formerly of Mound City, Kan., died Wednesday Nov. 17, 2010. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010 at the Curry Cemetery near Mound City, Kan. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m., until service at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel in Mound City...

Darvin A. Waggoner, 92, of Parsons, died at 7:20 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at Labette Health. His death was unexpected. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at the Church of the Nazarene in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery...

When I was young, my mother taught me to sew, a love that was lost as soon as I realized I was pitiful at it. Somewhere in junior high. Come to think of it, that's when I decided I was inept at just about everything I tried. Sewing was no exception. On home-ec assignments, I would end up with more remnants than actual ware, even though my teacher, Mrs. Douglas (bless her heart), would always try to find some redeeming quality in my designs...
