WICHITA -- Pleasanton's Lindsey Conn earned her school's only medal of the 2010 Kansas State Track and Field Championships here Saturday when she took seventh place in the Class 1A 400-meter dash. Conn, a freshman, turned in a time of 1:03.87 in the finals. Hallie Kuhlman of Sharon Springs won the race by nearly two seconds in 57.85...

Many kids are out of school for summer break, and for many families this means a significant change in their daily schedules. These changes often create situations in which parents must make decisions about leaving their child at home alone for some period of time. In 2001, the United States Census Bureau estimated that nearly seven million school-aged children are routinely left home alone...

Two local road preservation projects are now back on schedule. The Bourbon County projects are among 84 statewide projects totaling $86.5 million that are back on track thanks to the recent passage of the state's new comprehensive transportation program, also called T-WORKS. After being removed from the budget, the city has decided to donate money toward the annual fireworks presentation presented by the Elk's Lodge. With the annual fireworks presentation just a month away, the Fort Scott Elks Lodge 579 had requested the annual donation of $2,500 from the city during Tuesday evening's meeting, however the donation was removed from the 2010 budget. The commissioners were in support of the event but not sure if the money was available in the budget...

WICHITA -- In Fort Scott's only event at the Kansas State Track and Field Championships here Saturday, Fort Scott High School's Mallory Shelton cleared 5 feet even in Class 4A high jump, missing out on a medal when tie-breakers were used. Seventh-place medals went to Morgan Bell of Colby and Morgan Boore of Girard as each needed fewer attempts to clear the same height. Shelton was placed 10th officially...

WICHITA -- Tribune Area athletes picked up four more gold medals at the Kansas State Track and Field Championships here Saturday, bringing the weekend's total to four for athletes from Jayhawk-Linn and Uniontown high schools.
