BRONSON -- Errors were deadly for Uniontown's baseball team as it was swept in a Three Rivers League make-up doubleheader at Dawson Field here Friday, 17-12 and 9-7. The Eagles (2-4 TRL, 5-9 overall) committed 8 errors in each game. St. Paul scored 11 runs in the first 3 innings of the opener in taking what proved to be an insurmountable lead...

PARSONS -- Fort Scott High School's Colton Grillott and Charlie Sercer have qualified for the Kansas Class 4A State Tennis Tournament after finishing fourth in the Parsons Class 4A Regional here over the weekend. This is the first boys' season of a new format for Regional play, where the top six finishers advance to State. Although there were teams from Ottawa and Paola in the field, each of the six singles and double qualifiers came from Southeast Kansas League schools...

Four sophomores on Fort Scott Community College's women's basketball team signed their letters of intent with four-year schools Monday afternoon in the board room on campus. Valencia Kelly and Brittany Demery signed with Western Illinois, a member of the NCAA Division I Summit League located in Macomb, Ill. The conference includes Missouri-Kansas City, so both will play close to their junior-college home at least twice in their careers...

There will be a planning day for teachers at Winfield Scott and Eugene Ware elementary schools on Friday, so there will be no classes for students at these schools on that day. Classes at Fort Scott Middle School and Fort Scott High School will be in session Friday...

Beisner says legislature 'catered to those at government trough'

UNIONTOWN -- The Uniontown FFA chapter and other groups have organized a benefit dinner for Bronson resident Linda Neville. The event is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the UHS cafeteria, 601 Fifth St. Free-will donations will be accepted to help cover required medical expenses for Neville, who underwent open-heart surgery to replace an aortic valve last September. The dinner will include spaghetti with meat sauce, homemade bread, homemade dessert and a beverage...

UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown High School recently sent nine students to the Kansas State High School Activities Association Class 2A State Speech and Drama Championships which took place May 1 in Wichita. In order to qualify for the state championships, each student must have earned a first or second place finish at one of the invitational tournaments that take place throughout the school year, according to UHS Forensics Coach Myrna Wildschuetz...

Fort Scott firefighters and EMS personnel responded to a house fire Saturday which left the residents without a home. Shortly before 2 p.m., the Fort Scott Fire Department received a call of a fire at 420 Andrick, according to the FSFD, the fire was controlled by 2:18 p.m...
