The Ottawa All-Stars defeated the Wellington Braves, 13-4, Monday afternoon in the championship game of the Kansas Cal Ripken Baseball 12-Year-Old State Tournament at Don Hewett Field. The All-Stars, who came through the winner's bracket, are three-time champions having won State titles as 10-year-olds and 11-year-olds. Chamber to hold 'Before Hours' event Aug. 1

A Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event early next month will give attendees a chance to enjoy the Kansas Rocks Recreation Park. On Saturday, Aug. 1, the KRRP and the Brush Beaters Jeep Club will host the chamber "Before Hours" event which coincides with the annual Wheeling for Wounded Vets event that is being organized and sponsored by the Brush Beaters Club. ...

Airport Day officially canceled

The runways of the Fort Scott Municipal Airport will not be quite as active this September as the Airport Day has been officially canceled for 2009. The event, which began in 1997, has been put on hold due to a lack of funding. According to the Airport Advisory Board, the Airport Day Fund currently has $200 which is well short of the funding necessary to organize the event. Board members said the cost of advertising alone totaled $1,000 last year...

FSCC takes look at budget

The Fort Scott Community College Board of Trustees received an early look Monday at the college's budget for the 2009-10 school year. Preliminary figures in the FSCC budget show about $9.8 million in total projected revenue and expenses, $6.7 million in the college's general fund, about $1.6 million allotted for instruction, $1.9 million in money generated from Bourbon County taxpayers, $2.4 million for vocational education, and a little more than $738,000 for the FSCC truck driving program...

U.S. 69 south expansion on KDOT agenda

A project to add an additional two lanes of highway to U.S. Highway 69 between Fort Scott and Arma is on the Kansas Department of Transportation's list to begin within the next three years. KDOT Secretary Deb Miller announced Thursday a list of highway projects limited by budget cuts and funding uncertainties, as well as five additional projects that will be put into the initial stages of development starting next year...
