Janet and Mark Vanleeuwen of St. Paul, Kan., took her parents, John and Vera Parrish of Pittsburg, to Branson, Mo. to celebrate Vera's birthday. They enjoyed two shows, a Sunday church service, and each evening had cobbler as a special treat. Kim Domer, Arcadia, is now employed in Fort Scott and on Sunday, she passed out guest passes to the ladies for a free tour and figure analysis at the Curves fitness center...

The Garland Fire Department will hold it's annual Open house and Fundraiser, Saturday April 26 from 11 a.m.--3 p.m. at the Garland Fire Station. The 40th anniversary of the Redfield Ruritan Club was observed on the regular meeting night, April 10. This was also Family Night and the member's families were among the invited guests. There were approximately 50 persons present for this special night...

The Uniontown High School Class of 1965 held a reunion on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the Kaiser Lake near Mapleton. A carry in lunch was enjoyed, along with brats and hot dogs cooked over the fire pit. The event was planned in honor of Larry and Kathie Hayden, Port Angeles, Wash. who were visiting in the area, and had not been back to Bourbon County for several years. Donald Lee Fortman, age 78, former resident of Pleasanton, Kan. and more recently of Fort Scott Manor Nursing Home, died Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Mercy Health Center. He was born Jan. 9, 1930 in Pleasanton, Kan., the son of Frank Fortman and Wilhemine Rost Fortman. ...

Leo Robert Lager, 88, of Fort Scott, was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy Health Center on Saturday evening, April 12, 2008. He was born on Sept. 29, 1919, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Claus Elias and Emma Henrietta Mitzner Lager. He married Lucile Irene Reed on June 1, 1941, in Fort Scott. She preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 2003...

When youth are given the privilege to drive, they are handed the keys to their safety and the safety of those who ride with them and share the road with them. To encourage teenage drivers to talk to each other about the importance of traffic safety, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Department of Transportation have formed a new scholarship contest to promote Youth Traffic Safety Month in May, a KHP statement said...

A former Fort Scott resident was killed in a car accident April 7 in Saline County, Mo. Brendan K. Hulett, 18, Sweet Springs, Mo., was driving east on a south outer road about 1 1/2 miles west of Missouri Highway 127 around 10:19 p.m. April 7. The car went off the edge of the highway then returned to the road and began to turn counter-clockwise and was struck on the passenger side by another car driven by Jason Hall, 24, also of Sweet Springs, according to Missouri Highway Patrol...

Fort Scott native Richard Christy is taking his comedic talents to the silver screen. Christy, 34, a 1992 graduate of Uniontown High School who currently works as an on-air personality and writer for "The Howard Stern Show," is co-starring in the upcoming film, "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay," which is set to be released April 25. The film is a sequel to the 2004 comedy, "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle."...

Longtime local resident Bob Marshall recently announced his intent to establish an exploratory committee that will consider his candidacy for the 13th Kansas Senate District. Fort Scott Police continued the investigation Monday into a major fight early Friday at the old Colonial Motel on 215th Street. At 12:42 a.m. Friday, dispatchers received a call saying that 10 people were drinking alcohol and causing a disturbance at the motel at 1362 215th Street. Even though the address is in the county, the city has jurisdiction over the motel and restaurant and therefore enforces the area...

Local students not only know what bullying is, but they also know how to stop it. Alyssa George, Miss Kansas 2007, traveled to all of the schools in the local district on Monday to visit with students about bullying.
