CHERRYVALE -- Catherine Sercer finished in fourth place for Fort Scott High School's girls' varsity cross country team in the Parsons Invitational at Big Hill Lake here Thursday. Sercer clocked in with a time of 14 minutes, 4.72 seconds over the 3,200-meter course. Alicia Whitehurst of Independence was the winner in 13:32.12...

JOPLIN -- Fort Scott High School's golf team experienced a high Tuesday with a good finish at the Marmaton Valley Tournament in Moran. Unfortunately, they experienced a low here Thursday at the make-up of the Galena Invitational, finishing fifth as a team with a score of 263 over nine holes, 25 strokes off their pace on Tuesday...

RIVERTON -- Uniontown's volleyball squad swept a quadrangular here Thursday night against a pair of Class 3A schools and a Class 4A opponent. The Eagles improved to 8-5 on the season with the sweep. They defeated Columbus of the Southeast Kansas League, 25-19, 25-14, as Abbie Smith converted six of eight attack chances and recorded four kills. Riley Stephens and Char Bradbury also had four kills each...

A judge sentenced two teenagers Thursday to 24 months of probation and 40 hours of community service on charges of sex crimes against a 15 year-old girl in January. Sixth Judicial District Judge Mark Ward sentenced Evan D. Simpson, 18, and Corey W. Davis, 19, for their role in an incident at a house party on Jan. 27 in which a girl was sexually assaulted and exploited. The other three men haven't yet been sentenced...

The Taste of Fort Scott, sponsored by the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce, is Saturday at the Liberty Theatre, 114 S. Members of the USD 234 Board of Education discussed employment matters concerning Floyd Alexander Gibson in addition to other matters at a special noon board meeting Tuesday. Board members voted to terminate Gibson's contract as a teacher aide in the Fort Scott High School automotive technology program, USD 234 Superintendent Rick Werling said...

Without any funds available, members of the Fort Scott High School Class of 1992 have still managed to plan their 15-year class reunion that is scheduled to take place next month. Class member Lori Fleming (Bolton) said the class president typically plans reunions and other class events, but as the summer passed and no reunion was planned, several class members assembled to discuss planning an event...

A second annual fundraiser to benefit the family of the late Donnie Ragan will start at noon Saturday at Rusty's Sports Bar and Grill, 16 N. National Ave. The event will be a poker run in which motorcycles and other vehicles will trek 86 miles from Fort Scott to Pleasanton. Each participant will pay $20 for a "hand."...
