Youth football camp begins Monday

A youth football camp, for athletes entering grades 3-8, begins Monday and will run through July 20 at the Fort Scott High School practice field on the east side of the high school. After this weekend, one local high school student will reign supreme as the winner of the 2007 Bourbon County Fair Queen contest, which is scheduled to take place Sunday evening in Fort Scott. Last month, Fort Scott High School student Holly Schnichels and Uniontown Junior Senior High School student Holli Zellner were judged on a series of qualifications that will determine which young woman will be crowned queen during the second annual contest, after their scores are tallied by contest organizers later this week.. ...

Plans are under way for a new Sonic Drive-in to be built later this summer near the current restaurant's location at 1700 S. National Ave., company officials said. Officials assessing flood damage in Bourbon County

The Bourbon County Emergency Management office is asking county residents who have suffered property loss to contact them immediately. Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Laura Hyer said the county is currently assessing damage amounts. She needs residents who have sustained losses to fill out damage reports, so the information can be sent on to the State of Kansas...

The Extension office has been extra busy in recent days, as we prepare for the county fair. Dates for this years fair are July 15-21. Fair events actually started Monday with judging of 4-H clothing construction and fashion revue. The Bourbon County fair is organized by a volunteer fair board of community members. ...

Cattle losses extensive for local ranchers

CHETOPA - After losing this year's wheat and pecan harvest to an early freeze over Easter weekend, cattle owner and grain farmer Jeff Jackson, Chetopa, said he was counting on cattle, corn and soybean sales to get him through the year. Flood damage has taken away those income sources and left Jackson wondering where to go from here...
