Chamber to reveal position on demolition at commission meeting

The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce is expected to release its position regarding the dilapidated Miller and Nelson Block buildings at the Fort Scott City Commission meeting starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 1 E. Third St. Although that position is, as yet, unknown, it's expected that the chamber will recommend tearing down the structures, since commissioners at the last meeting voted 4-1 to advise staff to continue seeking necessary steps in safely taking the buildings down...

U-235 schools meet federal NCLB progress demands

UNIONTOWN -- USD 235 schools are hitting the mark this year. While many Kansas school districts failed to meet student performance goals on standardized tests this year, two Uniontown schools met adequate yearly progress this year, as required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act implemented in 2002, USD 235 Superintendent Randy Rockhold said. 100 YEARS AGO (1906) About 25 feet of stove pipe is required to connect the stove at the M.K.&T. depot with the flue. Last night while all was quiet about the station, there came a sudden crash, smash and bang. A dark cloud enveloped the office, but Night Operator Tom Barrett was unharmed. The stove pipe had fallen without the least warning and that ticket office looked like the interior of a soft coal burner... -
