The first degree murder trial for Kohlby Freeze was scheduled to take place this week but has once again been delayed because of the issue surrounding his mental competency to stand trial. Back in June, the court set aside Sept. 11-15 for the trial of 19-year-old Freeze, who is accused of the March 13, 2004, shooting death of Karl "Rex" Schenker. But within a week, defense lawyer Edward Battitori filed a motion to determine Freeze's competency...

For Winfield Scott second-grader Briana Williams, riding horses quickly went from a hobby to a love affair. However, at just eight years old, the daughter of Fort Scott residents Debbie Hilts and Brett Williams not only rides horses, she races them. She's not bad, either...

Fort Scott High's home volleyball opener did not go as hoped for Thursday night at the FSHS gymnasium. Playing tough competition from the Frontier League, the Tigers lost all three matches on the evening. The Tigers first lost to Prairie View, 25-20, 25-18. Then they fell to Osawatomie, 25-22, 25-13. Finally, in their best match of the night, they were defeated by Louisburg in three games, 25-12, 18-25, 25-22...

Irene Ruth Karleskint Umlauf, age 65, a former resident of Fort Scott, more recently of Wichita, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, one day after her 65th birthday. She was born September 4, 1941, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of Frederick J. ...

THRON -- Paige Reneé Thron, a girl, was born at 4:08 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at Mercy Health Center, to parents Brandi and Phillip Thron, Fort Scott. She weighed 8 pounds, 7.8 ounces at birth. Maternal grandparents are Cindy Jones and Daniel McDowell. Paternal grandparents are Amanda and Jo Duren, and Bill and Carla Luther. Katherine Roof received a telephone call announcing to her that there would be flowers delivered to her door at 5 p.m. There was a knock at the door promptly at 5 p.m., and answering the knock she found her nephew Bob Nizich, San Pedro, Ca., holding a bouquet of yellow roses! Bob Nizich visited here from Tuesday through Thursday, and was registered at the Lyons House in Fort Scott. The Fort Scott Community College Greyhound band has been tuning up recently -- but not for a football game or a concert. About 22 members of the FSCC band have been getting ready to participate in the "Rent-A-Kid" program, a fund raiser sponsored by the FSCC Music Department, in which students raise money for travel expenses and the music department, all at the same time...
